A Little History of our Area... Rockbridge County was named for the distinctive geological landmark, Natural Bridge, located in the southern portion of the County. Created in 1778 from portions of Augusta and Botetourt counties, Rockbridge County has been the home of military strategists Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson and Robert E. Lee, inventor Cyrus McCormick, and pioneer Sam Houston. Today, Rockbridge County encompasses 607 square miles of diverse, rolling terrain. Within its borders are two incorporated towns, Glasgow and Goshen, and two independent cities, Lexington and Buena Vista. Named in honor of the Massachusetts town where the AmericanRevolution began, Lexington was incorporated as a town in 1778, partially destroyed by fire 18 years later, reconstructed, and eventually chartered as a city in 1966. Many of the structures that were rebuilt or constructed after the fire of 1796 are officially designated State and national historical landmarks. Two of these landmarks, Washington and Lee University, founded in 1749, and Virginia Military Institute, founded in 1839, are among the oldest and most prominent academic institutions in the nation. Buena Vista was a focal point of the Shenandoah Valley land "boom" initiated in 1889 by several land development companies, one of which was the Buena Vista Company. In less than three years, Buena Vista grew from a sparsely populated rural area to a town with 19 industries that employed in excess of 1,000 workers. When incorporated as a city by the Virginia General Assembly in 1892, Buena Vista had a population of 5,240. It was during the land "boom" era that Buena Vista assumed its role as an industrial city, a role it still retains today. Southern Virginia University, is a designated State and National Historic Landmark. Request my Free Lexington, Buena Vista, and Rockbridge County Relocation Package.
